In November 1985, U.S. President Ronald Reagan and Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev met for the first time at the Geneva Summit. Their conversations were tense, cautious, and not immediately transformative, but a vital crack appeared in the iron wall of Cold War hostility. Nineteen months later, in June 1987, Reagan stood at the Brandenburg Gate in West Berlin and issued the historic call: “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” At the time, few believed real change was possible.
