The following review was taken from Quora. I thought it was clever so I cut and pasted it into a post for my site. But I navigated away and didn’t realize the author was missing. Bummer. So I’ll maybe be able to find it later. My apologies.
I agreed with a lot that’s been said. I loved it. I laughed. I cried. I think humans are not going to make it. We’re far too stupid. We are here because of alien intervention and they keep rescuing us. It’s obvious. We’re like children that never, ever grow up, so there must be some invisible mommy and daddy that keeps pulling our hands out of the fire. It’s only logical.
I think this is also a commentary on Covid and how some people are so incredibly stupid, they die from it and still deny that they are dying from Covid. What a world.
THE QUORA REVIEW:
A “movie critic” who works for the SFGate – whatever the hell THAT is – wrote that this movie is probably the worst movie that Leonardo DiCaprio has ever done. For that reason alone, I decided to watch it. The “movie critics” critique of this is probably the worst movie that this person has ever done. “Don’t Look Up” is in no way Leo’s worst film. If you have NETFLIX, watch this, and you be the judge.
Here’s an Imbd REAL and non-hating critique of the movie. I watched it, and I loved it, especially the ending, which was – in my opinion – one of the saddest endings that I have recently seen in a movie:
“Director Adam McKay’s latest outing is a biting satire with its crosshairs aimed at politicians and the larger society out there who are apathetic of the looming climate crisis facing the world. Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo Di Caprio star as a pair of scientists who discovers a rogue comet headed towards the Earth, triggering what they estimate to be an extinction-level event.
McKay uses the comet and the crisis surrounding it as an effective metaphor to critique everything from modern society’s obsession with pop culture to how technology controls us rather than the other way around. But, unfortunately, he also aims at media and news channels and sensationalizes even the most trivial stories.
Oscar-winner Leonardo Di Caprio keeps showing us he is the heir-apparent to Daniel Day-Lewis as the most outstanding actor among the current crop, effortlessly essaying the role of an under-confident, fretful, and fidgety professor, prone to panic attacks. In another Oscar winner, Jennifer Lawrence, he finds an able foil, and the duo plays off each other to devastating effect, enthralling the viewer with their yin-yang dynamic.
While most of the big names in the star-studded ensemble appear on screen for a limited time, McKay ensures that their impact is telling and profound. Meryl Streep was most certainly having a lot of fun returning to a comic role after long and making for a hilarious mother-son combination with the ever-dependable Jonah Hill, with quirky humor that will leave you in splits.
No one escapes McKay’s wrath with characters alluding to everyone from Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Mark Zuckerberg to Jay Z and Beyonce and even Donald Trump, Megan Kelly, and Jared Kushner. Then, he sets out with a single-minded focus to ridicule the entire system that has made modern America such a laughingstock in the world.
By the end of the movie, the viewers wonder if America’s actual state of affairs is. Our country is, after all, regarded as the leading light of the Western World.
Unfortunately, the metaphors and parodies sometimes hit too close to reality and serve as a massive shock to the system as well, making us question ourselves and how we let our politics and our prejudices override science and peer-reviewed research.
With Joe Biden still preoccupied with undoing all the damage done by Donald Trump, one can only hope that more capable hands are handling the climate crisis. We need political leaders who have a more holistic and long-term focus in mind. ‘Don’t Look Up’ is a chilling, era-defining, and hard-hitting political satire.
The title refers to the cataclysmic comet that is the MacGuffin in the movie and the ‘Ostrich Syndrome’ of the ruling class as they continue to bury their head in the sand regarding existential threats facing the at large. McKay is a modern genius, using humor to relay the most important messages.
