The future of democracy in the United States is in danger. Some of us are Democrats and others Republicans. Some identity with the left, some with the right, and some with neither. We have disagreed in the past, and we hope to be able to disagree, productively, for years to come.
We need to join together to defend liberal democracy. Because liberal democracy itself is in serious danger. Liberal democracy depends on free and fair elections, respect for the rights of others, the rule of law, a commitment to truth and tolerance in our public discourse. All of these are now in serious danger. The primary source of this danger is one of our two major national parties, the Republican Party, which remains under the sway of Donald Trump and Trumpist authoritarianism.

A friend writes: What I find curious: People I know who have been passionate and outspoken about Climate Action, gun rights, and women’s rights, now only seem to care about mandates, mandates, mandates.  Why?  Why are mandates more important than climate change, or abortion rights, voting rights, or saving our Democracy?
I think it is for this reason:
The GOP platform: NO masks, NO mandates, NO climate action, NO abortion choice, NO voting rights, NO gun control, NO tax for the 1%, NO to Democracy
The GOP only has mandates to rally Dems to vote against anyone who puts in place mandates and to create noise and distraction away from what Biden has accomplished in less than a year, which includes the first time in US history a massive Climate Action Plan. A divided society is a weakened society and a weakened Democracy.
With the latest confirmation, Biden is outpacing every other president since Richard Nixon in confirming circuit judges, who have the last word in most federal cases. Gelpi is Biden’s eighth new judge with experience as a public defender. That is as many as presidents Donald Trump, Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton landed in their first years combined
